Honor Mothers and Fathers!

In many countries, the second Sunday of May is Mother's Day, and the third Sunday of June is Father's Day. These are very popular and important memorial days also in South America. Families and relatives get together and celebrate actively.

Honor Mothers and Fathers!

Grandpa Eliceo, soon to be 100 years old, with his great friend and granddaughter, Lorena.

In Ecuador of South America around Mother's Day, the schools organize an event, inviting the parents of students to celebrate Mother's Day. Children sing or dance, have a meal with their parents, and give presents such as a hand-made card to their mothers. During this time of year, stores in towns sell cards, balloons, and gifts to celebrate Mother's Day.

On the day of Mother's Day, just at the moment when the day changes from Saturday to Sunday, many people play music and sing songs outside, celebrating Mother's Day. The big chorus continues until about two o'clock in the morning. There are many people who didn't get enough sleep on the following day. Slowly the morning comes. In the afternoon of Mother's Day, families get together and have a meal around Mothers.

On Father's Day in June, people spend their time with their families. This year again, Narsisa visited her parents in Sacre, which is six hours away by car from Guayaquil in the western Ecuador, to celebrate Father's Day with his family. Narsisa's father lives long, becoming 100 years old this year. On that day, nearly 80 people including Narsisa's eight brothers and sisters, their children and grandchildren (Narisisa's father's great grandchildren) got together in the small village with a population of about 60 people. Normally, Grandpa Eliceo is quiet, but surrounded by his family at the party, he had a broad smile on his face.

In Ecuador, people usually place importance on family gathering. They love to get together and dance. On this day, the dance party surrounding Grandpa Eliceo continued until late at night. There are many ways to show appreciation. One nice way is to get together with family and have a great time.
